Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to question specific calls from the official, mirroring the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
